Essaouira Wind Season — When to Visit
Essaouira is blessed with one of the most consistent wind patterns in the world, thanks to the Alizé trade winds that blow from the north/northeast along Morocco's Atlantic coast. These thermal winds are created by the temperature difference between the cool Atlantic Ocean and the hot Saharan interior.
Best Wind Season: April to September
The prime season for kitesurfing, wingfoil, and windsurfing in Essaouira runs from April through September. During these months, the Alizé winds blow almost daily at 18–30 knots (33–55 km/h), typically picking up around midday and lasting until sunset.
- June–August: Strongest and most consistent wind (20–35 knots). Ideal for intermediate and advanced riders.
- April–May & September: Moderate wind (15–25 knots). Perfect for beginners and learning.
Shoulder Season: October to March
While less consistent, Essaouira still gets windy days during winter. The wind is more variable and can blow from different directions. This is actually the best season for surfing, as Atlantic swells are bigger without strong thermal wind chopping up the waves.
Wind Direction
The predominant wind direction in Essaouira is north-northeast (NNE), which creates side-shore conditions in the main bay. This is ideal for kitesurfing and windsurfing as it keeps you parallel to the beach rather than pushing you out to sea.
